Reminder to Review Your Boat Insurance

April 2007 - Before loading up your pleasure cruiser of choice with family, friends, and fun, consider the following tips to purchasing adequate insurance for your boating adventures.

  1. Review your Medical Payments coverage. Medical payments coverage offers medical protection for you and your passengers if injured while aboard.

  1. Review your Watercraft Liability coverage. What if you or someone driving the boat accidentally hits a skier, diver, or swimmer? What if you collide with another boat or hit someone’s dock? Your Watercraft Liability coverage will pay for injuries or damages you cause to a person or property while in the water.

  1. Review your Physical Damage coverage. Every year, hundreds of boats are damaged after running into another boat, dock, or submerged object. When this happens, the boat, motor, and equipment may suffer thousands of dollars of damage. Physical Damage coverage will pay for repairs to your boat and equipment if damaged in an accident.

  1. Review your coverage for damages resulting from theft and transit. Thousands of boats are stolen every year, often as a package (i.e. boat, motor, and trailer). In addition, boats being transported are easily damaged in motor vehicle accidents. Review your coverage to make sure these two common exposures are adequately covered.

There are standard ways to save money on boat insurance.

· Notify your insurance carrier if you are a captain with 3 or more years of experience.

· Take a certified boater’s safety course.

· Efforts to increase the security of your boat, such as the addition of fire safety equipment or an alarm may also help you qualify for a discount.

· If possible, purchase your boat insurance policy from an insurance company with which you already have another policy, such as auto or homeowners. You may qualify for a multi-policy discount.
